UNDERSTANDING SECURITY LICENSES

CLASS D — UNARMED SECURITY (REQUIRED FIRST)

Class D is the entry-level license required by Florida law to work as a security officer. All individuals must obtain this license before working in any security role.

  • Required for unarmed security positions

  • Covers access control and patrol duties

  • Applies to residential, commercial, and corporate sites

CLASS G — ARMED SECURITY (ADDITIONAL)

Class G is an additional license that may be obtained after Class D for assignments requiring a firearm.

  • Authorizes armed security assignments where required

  • Used for higher-responsibility roles

  • Not required for all security positionsonsibility assignments

KEY RULE

All armed security roles require Class D first. Class G is added only when the assignment requires it.

Which license should I start with?

Start with Class D. To work armed in Florida, you must hold Class D + Class G

Do I need Class D before I take Class G?

Yes. Complete Class D (40 hours) first, then take Class G (28 hours, classroom + range).

How many hours are required?

**Class D: 40 hours (online).** Class G: 28 hours (classroom + range). We list them as two parts—no combined totals

How do I enroll?

What are the age requirements?

You must be 18 or older to apply for Class D or Class G

Can non U.S. citizens apply?

**Yes.** Class D accepts U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, or applicants authorized to work in the U.S. For Class G (armed), non citizens must be lawful permanent residents.

Do I need fingerprints?

**Yes.** All applicants submit electronic fingerprints; fees are separate from course tuition

What happens after I finish Class D or G?

You’ll get a completion certificate and instructions to apply with FDACS Division of Licensing.

Do Class G holders have annual requirements?

Yes. Complete a 4 hour annual requalification and submit on time to remain current.

Will a criminal record stop me?

Not always. FDACS reviews each case after a fingerprint background check. If you have past charges, apply and contact us—we’ll explain the documents FDACS usually requests.
